A girl was afraid of a spider…
Firenymph | Jan 17, 2010

Miss Muffet, was sitting on her bum, eating some curds and whey. A spider sat down next to her, and this frightened her therefore causing her to leave.

spiders are scary
repoman747 | Jan 17, 2010

small things can scare/ big things ??? or spiders like food :L
lolathejay@rocketmail.com | Jan 17, 2010

It’s a nursery rhyme about girls who are scared of spiders.
tyvot_2 | Jan 17, 2010

It means that spiders are scary to a lot of people. Sometimes scaring people is enough. You don’t actually have to harm them. I have read books on the history of La Cosa Nostra and you get that same lesson….if you can scare people enough to know not to mess with you, you don’t have to go around actually hurting anybody.

Curds and whey is cottage cheese
Goddess of Grammar | Jan 17, 2010

Little Miss Muffet was a small girl whose first name was Patience. Her father, Dr. Muffet, was an entomologist (someone who studies insects). Whilst eating her breakfast one day she was frightened by one of his spiders and ran away! This particular Nursery Rhyme reputedly dates back to the late 16th century!

A tuffet is a small stool and curds and whey is cottage cheese. (At least in England it is. For USA readers it’s probably soft cheese.)
quatt47 | Jan 17, 2010

There was a little girl called Muffet
She was eating curds and whey while she was sitting on a tuffet (maybe it was grass)
Suddenly a spider came and sat next to her
When she happened to look at it she got frightened and ran away.
Ritika K | Jan 17, 2010

Would help to know where in the world you come from!
Little Miss Muffet was sitting on a tuffet or small tussock or grassy hump in a meadow. She was eating a dish of a kind of curdled milk called ‘junket’ in many countries. Actually junket is made by curdling milk with rennet. When you dig a spoon in it separates into curds (solids) and whey (liquid). It’s a bit like blanc-mange or milk jelly (ow). The rest of this old english nursery rhyme is self-explanatory.
Quat47 is not correct. A tuffet is not a small stool, and curds and whey is not cottage cheese! It could be likened to ‘clabbered milk’ with the whey left in it though.
Mike | Jan 17, 2010

Little Miss Muffett
Sat on a tuffet ……………………..tuffett - low footstool
Eating her curds and whey …….curds - part of milk used fo chhese making…
…….whey - milk separated from the curds
Along came a spider………………spider - an eight legged insect like animal

hope that helps
WINGNUT | Jan 17, 2010

A tuffet is a small cushioned seat. Curds and whey are cottage cheese.
Joanne | Jan 17, 2010

It has a deeper meaning that if we see something that the typical society views as ugly or scary we instantly gain that mental attitude about it. But in essence if a spider is simply sitting down next to you then why run?

Why do dogs howl at sirens?
I KNOW NOT ALL DOGS HOWL, but mine do.

I have an adorable 2 year old pound rescue puppy (pluto). He’s part German Shepard and Collie. I love my squishie to death. And then my mom has a Siberian Husky; her name is Siska.

We live literally right next to a busy road. It’s our house, the fence, the creek, then the road. We don’t live in the city, we live actually in a VERY small town (I hate it with a passion) but the road we live on is very busy. EVERY NIGHT there are police sirens, ambulances, and fire trucks that come by. And both of our dogs howl like crazy!

We had a barbeque outside though and it was night time, a police siren started coming down and our dogs started whining. I put my hands over my baby’s ears (I think it hurts them) and he started to whimper as it was like, right beside us.

My dog howls when the train goes past and blows it horn. They have sensitive ears, just like they have sensitive noses. They hear better than humans do, so when they hear high pitched sirens or horns, they howl because it hurts their ears. Nothing you can do about it.

speedy_me18 | Feb 05, 2010

It hurts their ears. A dogs hearing is a lot stronger than a humans. I think part of the reason why they howl to drown out the sounds their sensitive to.

Really bad knee pain and more…?
I have been having problems with my knee for about 3 months now. I hyperextended it and i felt a sharp pain and a pop back around Thanksgiving. Now it seems to happen all the time and my knee is constantly hurting and sometimes is accompanied by swelling. Now when i stand and let my knees straighten there is a sharp pain when i am fully straightened (right where my knee and shin bone meet) and it almost feels like if i keep going it’s going to snap into two. It’s really starting to worry me and I don’t know what to do. Another thing that worries me is that anytime i hit my knee on anything, even if it’s just a tiny tap, it is excruciating pain. Please don’t tell me to see a dr though because we don’t have insurance therefore i can’t go see one, but if you have any ideas on what it might be or what to do that’d be helpful.

one more thing that could help–about three years ago i was running in the dark and fell down a ditch where i hit my knee on a rock. now there’s like a "hole" in my knee but when i went to the dr for it they didn’t seem to think there was a problem

please help :(

A questions about Roadrunner Records?
Everyone knows they carry Nickelback and Slipknot and Theory of A Deadman…

But most metal fans know they also carry bands like Daath, Cavalera Conspiracy, Cradle of Filth, and Killswitch Engage.

Do you consider Roadrunner a great, legit metal record label, or do they lose credibility with you for signing Slipknot and Nickelback?

if you want to be called a great metal label should probably keep nickelback off your artist list
i’m gonna say they needed to pay some bills and needed bands people actually listen too
SOLD OUT

actually if you think about it nickelback is doin their part to keep the metal alive
Higher is a goal | Feb 07, 2010

Well I think that they totally sold out (especially by having Nickelback). Then again, they have such amazing bands as Dream Theater and Megaeth, leading me to reason that they are still awesome even though they hve a couple bands who are only there so that the label can make money.
84Mac | Feb 07, 2010

Well I am a fan of Slipknot so I don’t count them as a negative band on their label lol But, I’ve had that argument many times in my head. I can’t stand Theory Of A Deadman or Nickelback and I don’t get why they’re on that label.

I don’t consider them a great metal record label but definitely a legit one. Labels like Metalblade and Nuclear Blast are way better in my opinion.
Adam | Feb 07, 2010

In general, I don’t consider Roadrunner a very credible record label. They’re a subsidiary of Warner Music Group, and all they really care about is trendy bands that make money. But as you said, there are some great bands on Roadrunner, like Opeth and Porcupine tree.

I much prefer independent labels, but it’s not like I won’t listen to a band just because they’re on Roadrunner.

Atheists: How do you celebrate Christmas?
Or do you?

I’m an atheist, and my Christmases really haven’t changed at all from the time I was Catholic (except I don’t go to midnight mass anymore). I mean, almost none of the major Christmas traditions have anything to do with the birth of Jesus. For me, it’s a time for family, food, beautiful decorations, charity, and love. :) (and -who the hell am I kidding- presents!)

And of course I love Christmas music, even the religious songs! It’s just music, just because you sing about it doesn’t mean you believe it happened (I don’t believe in Rudolph or Frosty either, but boy do I love those songs!)

And no, I don’t call it Solstice or anything else. More power to you if you do, but I think Christmas has become so secular that it’s open to everyone!

So, what do you all do for Chirstmas? :)

Some way as Christians.

By telling other people that Christmas is "a time for giving " , whilst engaging in mindless mass consumerism.

I need help remembering the name if this horror movie?
I don’t remember the name of this movie but I remember that the villian in this movie was a woman that was half human half tree and she was being controlled by this huge evil tree that had the souls of little babys. I think in order for her to survive she needed another babys blood or something but she was killed because a guy destroyed the tree with a chainsaw. This clip was in the boogeymen DVD compilation that featured the scariest villians in movies. Any help is appreciated.
